President's Message

The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) was established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and is an old university with a new name, formerly known as the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, it was renamed as UCAS in 2014.

UCAS is a unique Chinese university, featured most prominently by the “fusion between research and teaching”. Backed up by high-calibre research and personnel resources of CAS research institutes, UCAS fuses  the institutes in terms of managerial structure, faculty members, teaching systems and scientific research, and is beautifully dubbed as “the Closest Place to Science”. UCAS believes that scientists at the cutting edge of scientific research should also mount the classroom platform, thereby updating students on developments at the research frontiers, and encouraging and guiding them to study and think on the shoulders of great scientists. Of the 14,564 supervisors for graduate students at UCAS, more than 95% are research fellows with CAS institutes.

The 38 years of UCAS history is imbued with the culture and heritage of the 67 years of CAS history. UCAS assumes an undertaking of propelling developments in science and technology, and is geared towards producing innovative minds and entrepreneurial spirits. UCAS is home to the best minds in China’s modern science history. These scientists laid the country’s groundwork for science disciplines, and scored the most iconic achievements in science and technology in modern China. Every pathway and every classroom on campus have been imprinted with their stories.

The 38-year-old and the 38-year-young UCAS has created many “firsts” in China’s educational history: the first graduate school of the People’s Republic of China; the PRC’s first PhDs in science, in engineering, and the first PhD with a dual degree, as well as the first female PhD; the largest number of enrolled graduate students in China; and the largest number of enrolled overseas PhD candidates.

“Vision dictates height in life”. UCAS encourages and supports faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students to go on exchange programmes or joint research with the world’s best research institutions and universities. UCAS has instituted partnerships with over 80 world-renowned research institutions and universities, including the Max Planck Society in Germany, the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in France, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in the United States, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Moreover, UCAS established the Sino-Danish College, in co-operation with the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science (the former Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) and eight public universities including the University of Copenhagen. The Sino-Danish College is aimed at cultivating high-end graduates with international vision and competitiveness.

Towards the goal of a global first-rate university, UCAS has been following its own teaching philosophies. It encourages students to enhance innovation capacity in an across-the-board manner, and attaches even greater importance to imparting liberal arts. UCAS not only disseminates knowledge, but also instils in students an ideal to contribute to humanity, and guides them towards insight, independent thinking, empathy for humanity, integrity and tolerance, a spirit of co-operation and sharing, and the courage to challenge themselves and become better human beings.
